Scary Transgenders

OVERVIEW:

Scary Transgenders is my visual novel about a 10 year old girl named Dahlia who loves to play chess, but is being denied because of a perceived biological advantage over the “real girls” that’s right, in …chess. This concept was based on the trans chess grandmaster, Yosha Iglesias, who was denied the right to play in women’s tournaments by FIDE. Fourtunately in this case of Ms. Iglesias, the French chess Federation, German chess Federation, and several other chess partners throughout Europe have stood behind her, refusing to enforce the ban on trans women in chess. Allyship and support is crucial to the trans rights movement, because when we stand together as a community despite our differences, we are united and better able to organize and provide support for those who need it. 

Through Scary Transgenders, I want to to meet each player where they are- whether they are a trans player, ally, or transphobic person playing this for a laugh- I am a trans creator, and I believe that the root cause of anti-trans sentiments isn’t blind hatred, it’s genuine misunderstanding. Wherever one may fall on the political spectrum, their news is catered to what they already believe, which limits people’s access to new perspectives.

 With an increase in AI art, attacks on trans rights, and poor media literacy I thought telling stories of trans people through digital hand-drawn animation was a good way to go about that.  I indroduced this game on my Instagram last week with the tagline: "Hopelessness is the worst feeling, so instead of succumbing I made a game" and I hope that players of Scary Transgenders  realize through this project that their abilities, artistic or otherwise matter. If you have a story to tell and people to support, being politically active through art or other forms of advocacy can give us a direction in these trying times.While my game is just a small way of unifying people around trans rights, I hope to have a lasting positive impact on my community and the people I care about through this project.
